ATC COMPETITION

Rise of the Controllers: Chess of the Air

On February 29 and March 4, 2024, the Guild of Air Transportation Students (GATS) challenged the Air Traffic Control skills of selected PATTS students in a visual vectoring and enroute competition entitled, “Rise of the Controllers: Chess of the Air.” The event took place at the campus VVET laboratory and was attended by thirteen participants from various college programs.

Guided by its vision of becoming the center of excellence in aviation education, PATTS is the pioneering aviation school in the country to provide its students with Visual Vectoring Enroute Training (VVET). On the first day of the event, an elimination round occurred. All thirteen participants were to compete through a state-of-the-art computer program that can mimic intense air traffic scenarios. They had to successfully manage traffic scenarios of aircrafts in a given simulation to safely navigate the airspace. Six of the top-performing students during the elimination round advanced to the final round, which was held on the competition’s second day, March 4, 2024.

At the end of the strenuous hours of the final round, Mr.  Zyriel Rey Notada (BS Aeronautical Engineering student) was hailed as the champion. He was then followed by Mr. Ezekiel Manrique (BS Aeronautical Engineering student) as the first runner-up, and placing Mr. Jhon Allen Dumosdos (BS Air Transportation Student) as the second runner-up.
