MIDYEAR GRADUATION
Navigating New Skies: PATS’ 54th Commencement Exercises in March
PATTS College of Aeronautics ushered in a new era for its graduates on March 1, 2024, with a momentous graduation ceremony for its Midyear Term A.Y. 2022-2023 and First Semester A.Y. 2023-2024 graduates held at the prestigious Chairman’s Penthouse. As the curtains closed on their training phase, graduates eagerly embraced the dawn of their careers in the aviation industry.
The March graduation ceremony was held twice for different batches of graduates. In the morning session, esteemed members of the institution’s Board of Directors were also in attendance including Engr. Jose Eduardo S. Valdez (College President and Chief Operations Officer), Dr. Ana Mercedes Q. Gatmaytan, Mr. Ramon B. Dumlao, Jr., Ms. Jennifer Charlotte G. Orola, and Ms. Ma. Rosa Josefina D. Fresnido along with graduates from the Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Avionics Technology, Bachelor of Science in Aircraft Maintenance Technology, and Aircraft Technician Course.
In the afternoon session, also present were Ms. Ma. Felisa S. Valdez (Chairman of the Board and Chief Finance Officer), Engr. Jose Eduardo S. Valdez (College President and Chief Operations Officer), Dr. Ambrosio S. Valdez III (Vice Chairman of the Board), Atty. Anna Katrina V. Cruz (Board Director and VP for Administrative Affairs), Dr. Emelita I. Javier (VP for Student Affairs), and Engr. Joy Cosme Amores Jr. (VP for Academic Affairs) along with graduates from Bachelor of Science in Airline Business Administration, Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Air Transportation, and Bachelor of Science in Aircraft Maintenance Technology.
A notable alumnus, who graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2007 with a Bachelor's Degree in Aeronautical Engineering, graced the ceremony with his presence. Engr. John Filemon T. Torres had achieved the top spot in the Aeronautical Engineering Licensure Examination in the same year. With an illustrious career spanning 17 years at Lufthansa Technik Philippines, he currently holds the esteemed position of Section Manager of Aircraft Structures and Powerplant in the technical services division.
In his introduction of the guest of honor, Engr. Valdez underscored the exemplary dedication of the alumnus. Despite having the opportunity to pursue his career abroad, he chose to remain in the Philippines, committing himself to serving his country with unmatched expertise and unwavering dedication. He stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration for aspiring aviators, urging them to pursue excellence and demonstrate their expertise in the aviation industry. In his commencement address, he painted a vivid metaphorical picture of their journey ahead. He began by expressing gratitude to his mentors and instructors, reflecting on his own transformation from a student to a professional in the aviation industry. Furthermore, he emphasized that he “have arrived at the destination, the destination that [he] really aspired for when [he] set foot in college, until [he] realized it is just the beginning of endless possibilities of self-discovery, learning and improvement.”
Engr. Torres likened the ceremony to the emergence of a butterfly from its cocoon, symbolizing the end of one phase and the beginning of another filled with endless possibilities. Using the caterpillar-to-butterfly analogy, he urged the graduates to recognize the metamorphosis they had undergone during their time at PATTS. He emphasized that just like the butterfly, they too had transformed, gaining the wings necessary to soar to new heights in their careers.
He then reminded the graduates of the varied opportunities awaiting them in different careers and locations after graduation. Despite the inevitable challenges they may face in the workplace—such as dealing with clients, meeting project deadlines, and managing heavy workloads—he encouraged them to gather their strength and embrace these challenges as opportunities for personal growth. He emphasized that it is through overcoming struggles that one experiences significant growth. He drew analogies to nature and various endeavors, highlighting that just as a flower blooms after enduring harsh seasons, a diamond shines brightly under immense pressure, and a leader rises by overcoming obstacles, so too will they grow and succeed by facing and overcoming challenges in their professional lives.
He also reminded graduates about the diverse career paths awaiting them post-graduation, urging them to embrace the challenges ahead as opportunities for personal growth. Drawing from his own experience, he highlighted the significance of seeking support from exceptional individuals. Encouraging graduates to reflect on their aspirations and motivations, he emphasized the importance of understanding their purpose as a key driver for progress and success.
Engr. Torres then concluded his message with a meaningful reflection on the importance of understanding one's purpose and the invaluable support of parents throughout the journey. Additionally, he emphasized the significance of understanding one's motivations, stating, "Understanding our 'whys' will empower us to overcome our excuses."
And last but not least, another shining star of this graduation ceremony is the presence of the graduates' parents. These are the individuals who have provided unwavering support throughout their learning journey. They have been the pillars that held them up until they could stand on their own, spreading their own wings. Through every smooth flight and turbulent journey, these parents have remained steadfast by their side.
Truly, graduation transcends mere acknowledgment of personal achievements and receipt of diplomas. It is an occasion to celebrate with all those who have contributed to reaching this significant milestone. It is a moment to express gratitude to the parents, mentors, teachers, and loved ones whose guidance and encouragement have propelled the graduates forward on their path to success.
