On August 27, 2024, under the warm rays of the sun peeking through the phenomenal halls of the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), a noticeable excitement penetrated the atmosphere. Proud graduates from PATTS College of Aeronautics proudly stood in rows awaiting a new and challenging profession as they stepped into a new phase of their lives. Today is one of the most momentous days of their lives; years of commitment, passion, and perseverance merge into one grand ceremony—to bear fruit—the 55th Commencement Exercises, a ceremony that commemorates achievements of the past and promises much success yet to await.
PATTS’ 55th Commencement Exercises buzzed with excitement and anticipation. The stage was set not only for the graduates but also for an esteemed lineup of notable guests who graced the occasion with their presence. Among them was Madame Ma. Felisa S. Valdez (Chairman and CFO), Dr. Ambrosio S. Valdez III (Vice Chairman of the Board), Engr. Jose Eduardo S. Valdez (College President and COO), Dr. Ana Mercedes Q. Gatmaytan (Board Director), Mr. Ramon B. Dumlao Jr. (Board Director), Atty. Anna Katrina V. Cruz (Board Director and VP for Administrative Affairs), Ms. Jennifer Charlotte G. Amores Jr. (VP for Academic Affairs), including the Program Chairpersons and Department Heads. Their appearance not only brought out the importance of the occasion but offered unending experience and motivation to the graduates as they ventured out into their fields of occupation.
For years, these young aviators dedicated countless hours to studying their textbooks, attending educational seminars, and participating in hands-on workshops to gain knowledge in aviation and related fields. After the turbulence and headwinds they faced, particularly due to the global pandemic, their runway had finally cleared for takeoff. Rows of graduates stood eagerly, eyes gleaming with anticipation, dressed in graduation gowns, bursting into joyful applause as they stepped into their professional journeys. Families and friends filled the hall, some tearful and others beaming with pride - not because it marked the end of years of hard work, but because it signaled a leap into futures brimming with limitless possibilities.
Perhaps one of the most influential leaders this country has ever had, changing Olongapo City and revitalizing Subic Bay in his time and then introducing the image of the country to the world in the legendary "Wow Philippines" tourism campaign, this year’s Commencement Speaker has served the country as a senator of accountability in government service, pushing for reforms to rebuild public confidence. He led the Philippine Red Cross, transforming it into a world-class humanitarian organization. Known for his deep commitment to public service, he left a legacy of integrity and compassion that continues to inspire many Filipinos. This year’s Commencement Speaker is none other than Senator Richard “Dick” Gordon.
Delivering an inspiring keynote at the 55th Commencement Exercises, Sen. Dick Gordon captivated the audience with a perfect blend of wisdom and humor. He encouraged the graduates to pursue their dreams relentlessly, with integrity at the core. Sharing insights on the resilience and adaptability needed to overcome obstacles, his words resonated deeply. By the end of his speech, the graduates felt a renewed sense of purpose, ready to embrace the future with confidence and determination.
Gratitude to Parents and Teachers
In his speech, Sen. Gordon expressed deep appreciation for the efforts of the graduates’ parents and teachers. He urged the graduates to give their parents a “very, very grand applause” for the sacrifices they made to support their success. He also extended his gratitude to the professors, recognizing their role in guiding the students throughout their academic journey. "They worked hard to make it to this day," he said.
Integrity: The Road to Success
Sen. Gordon also emphasized that integrity is the foundation of success. He highlighted the importance of honesty and avoiding shortcuts, stressing that true success comes from being accountable to oneself. “When you stand before the mirror, you know who you are,” he told the graduates.
Diligence and Ambition
He also did not hold back in reminding the graduates that hard work is key to achieving their dreams. Sharing personal stories, he spoke about how his father instilled ambition in him, recounting his father’s desire to become an aeronautical engineer, despite being interrupted by war. He encouraged the graduates to aim high, stressing that without ambition, progress is impossible. “Aim high,” he said. “If you don’t have ambition, you won’t get anywhere.”
Seize the Opportunities in Aviation
Sen. Gordon also highlighted the vast opportunities in the aviation industry, especially for PATTS graduates. With the rise of global tourism, he pointed out that 1.3 billion tourists are expected, creating a demand for 35,250 new aircraft. This being said, he urged the graduates to capitalize on these opportunities.
Persistence in Adversity
Drawing from his own life, Sen. Gordon reminded the graduates that challenges are inevitable but resilience is essential. "Life is a series of triumphs and tragedies. You win today, lost tomorrow, but you must always get back on your feet,” he said.
A Final Call to Action
In closing, Sen. Gordon encouraged the graduates to look forward to bright days ahead, though they would require effort and determination. “The best days of your life are ahead of you,” he declared. He then ended with a quote from Ulysses: “Seek a newer world, sail beyond the sunset, and never yield.”
As the graduates leave PATTS College of Aeronautics, they are not only equipped with technical skills but also armed with values of integrity, ambition and perseverance. Sen. Dick Gordon’s inspiring message--never to give up and seize the new opportunities in aviation--has left them ready to face the future. These young aviators are prepared to embrace adversity, knowing that it will lead them to success. For them, the sky is not the limit but the beginning. The powerful words from the 55th Commencement remind them to aim higher, work harder, and face challenges with determination. As this industry grows and opportunities unfold, they are ready to soar to new heights.
