GATS DEBATE 2024
Clash of Brains: Mind Over Machine?
In a riveting clash of intellects and voices on March 22 2024, the Guild of Air Transportation Students (GATS) hosted the "Dynamic Voices: Clash of Brains Debate Competition" at the Drawing Room. The topic in question was the application of Artificial Intelligence in the Aviation Field.
The government team, comprised of Ms. Althea Lara O. Rivera, Mr. Charles Matthew G. Untalan, and Mr. Vince Rupert C. Mayor, opened the debate with a strong warning, asserting the integration of AI in aviation defies the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). However the opposition, represented by Nicole Adrein Asuncion Ramos, Julia Cassandra Dela Cruz, and Erros Damien Garbolo, argued that AI should not be seen as a replacement for humans in the field but rather a supporting tool, capable of minimizing human error and improving safety measures. Ultimately, the opposition also argued that there were yet to have specific standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization that AI would jeopardize. The debate continued with this intensity, as the room filled with a consistent feeling of tension made stronger by the compelling rebuttals from both sides.
The decision was judged by Engr. Joy Cosme G. Amores Jr. (VP for Academic Affairs and Ad Interim for BS Air Transportation Department), Mr. Felizardo Sumpay (Social Science Instructor), Capt. Thomas Tannhauser Fortun (CAAP Assistant Director General - LL, Administrative and Finance). The opposition side came out on top, with their arguments swaying the judges the most. Ms. Althea Lara from the government side received the Best Interpolator Award for her eloquent arguments, with Mr. Erros Banang being recognized as the Best Speaker of the debate for his articulate defense and speaking skills.
The outcome of the competition signifies not only the critical and persuasive communication skills and rhetorical abilities of the debaters but also the significant recognition of the potential of AI in aviation safety measures. As technology continues to evolve, debates like this serve as forums for exploring the complexities and implications of each situation.
