The impact of technology in all aspects of human life cannot be undermined. In fact, technology has brought significant changes even to the events industry. In order to keep up with the trends of the rapidly changing events industry, the BS Tourism Management in cooperation with the PATTS Tourism Society (PTS) held a seminar entitled, “Event Technology Towards Sustainable Events Management,” last April 26, 2023 at the PATTS Audio Visual Room (AVR). The said title was drawn from an international best practice event management as stated in the Asia Pacific Institute of Events Management book to engage tourism students to embrace sustainability.
Mr. Ericson Mendoza, the first guest speaker and Director of the Center for Business and Innovation at University of Batangas, enumerated the 17 sustainable goals and categorized the top priorities of sustainable event management such as environmental conservation, cost savings, positive brand image, social responsibility, innovation and creativity, and long-term sustainability.
The second guest speaker, Dr. David Hind (President of Asia Pacific Institute for Events Management) talked about the overview of the book and the APIEM country members involved. He divided the main objectives into three (3): identify the examples of event technology, explain how events could be designed to be sustainable using technology and provide guidance on using event technology in event planning. He also shared a quote of Arundhati Ray saying, “Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine the world anew. This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next.” Simply, people will think and have to think differently about designing and hosting sustainable events in the future. He closed his discussion by saying, “think like there is no box,” because there’s always a wide array of possibilities to consider.
With gleaming eyes and soaring minds, the participants of the seminar who listened intently to the guest speakers went home with new knowledge on the intricacies of events technology for a sustainable events management.
